THE BIOMATERIAL PROBLEM
If circularity is the goal, farming is not the answer. The answer lies in repurposing existing waste streams, not creating new ones.
• Farming of new land turns biodiverse forests into depleted, dry grasslands at best or deserts, at worst.
• The developing world’s slash and burn farming releases huge amounts of GHGs that can take hundreds of years to recapture with the crops produced on the same land.
• Farming arable land for bio-products makes the land unavailable for food production and can cause food scarcity issues.
• Fertilizers and pesticides largely contribute to the global eutrophication problem
